Alta's Cabin

Bear Hill School

This tiny cabin was built around 1930 and mostly used as a wash shed on the Schrock homestead. Later it was renovated into a writer's retreat for Alta Schrock. There she wrote two weekly columns for The New Republic newspaper in Meyersdale , PA. After founding the Artisan Village in 1967, Dr Schrock moved her cabin to Spruce Forest where it has housed many of the artists, including a glass blower, bird carver, basket maker, and pysanky studio.

Alta's cabin is closed for the winter. Artists interested in renting this cabin during the season (May through October) may contact the Village office 301.895.3332 for application information.
